MAKE EVERY EFFORT (By: Mike Sherman)

It’s ironic that we could never save ourselves by our own human efforts, yet the Bible makes it clear that an effort must be made on our part in order to experience salvation and eternal life. Peter reminds us of this fact. 2 Peter 3:14-15 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. (15) Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.
Peter says “make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.” after reminding us as Christians that we have something to look forward to- “since you are looking forward to this,…” – “this” refers back to Peter’s previous reminder – 2 Peter 3:13 – But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. Peter motivates us to “make every effort” because we have something fantastic and unique to look forward to which is spending eternity with Christ in heaven.
Remember Jesus said- John 14:1-4- “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. (2) My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (4) You know the way to the place where I am going.”
We know Peter is not referring to a new physical heaven and earth because he just finished making it clear this earth and universe as we know it is going to be destroyed at some point in the future. 2 Peter 3:10-12 -But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. (11) Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives (12) as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
God has graciously revealed the biggest event of all time that will occur at some point in the future. He’s given us a glimpse of the future in hope that we might be motivated to “make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with him.” Surely we can take God at His word, trusting that certainly things will take place just as He has revealed.
We can also find peace and hope in the fact that Jesus has already gone ahead to prepare that heavenly home for those who love Him and faithfully follow Him. Jesus made it clear that we can only find our way to that eternal home by following Him. John 14:6- Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
With all this in mind let’s strive together to live holy and godly lives while making every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with God. With God’s help and encouragement from one another we can do it!
