GOT MILK? (By:Mike Sherman)

It’s quite amazing to observe a new born baby and the way they just naturally crave milk for their nourishment as well as pleasure I assume. I think it’s safe to say a baby gets that “yummy in the tummy” feeling after consuming their favorite meal- “milk is good food” as the commercial used to say. When we are spiritually healthy Christians we’ll experience a similar craving for the pure spiritual milk of God’s word which is essential for our spiritual growth.
I Pet. 2:1-3- Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
In Peter’s second letter we are challenged to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (II Pet. 3:18) Growth in these areas of our spiritual life are directly tied to our craving for God’s word. Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.”- Mt. 5:6
As we satisfy our craving for the nourishing food of God’s word we’ll naturally begin to grow in the Christian virtues Peter outlines in II Pet. 1:5-8
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge, and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance, and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As we grow and mature in these areas of our Christian life we will be “effective” and “productive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
