During the recent fire storms here in California, there were some here who were caught by surprise and were injured or tragically lost their lives as a result. Their were others however, who received fair warning but, decided to stay. Being caught by surprise I can understand but, consciously deciding to risk death after fair warning is given and a way of escape provided is incomprehensible.
God gives us fair warning that one day His wrath is coming in the future. We don’t know if it is coming in the near future or in the distant future but, it is coming.
Romans 2:5-8- Because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourselves for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgement will be revealed. (6) God will repay each person according to what they have done. (7) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and mortality, he will give eternal life. (8) But, for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
Notice those mentioned in this verse are storing up wrath against themselves by being stubborn and refusing to repent (have a changed heart). It’s up to every individual to decide to heed God’s warning and do what it takes to avoid the coming wrath of God.
Only by the grace of God can we ever avoid His wrath but, at the same time it takes effort on our part- “by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, He will give eternal life.” Eternal life is the free gift of God and it can never be earned but, must be desired. Likewise, the wrath of God comes upon those who choose to be “self-seeking, reject the truth and follow evil.”
Thank God he’s provided a way out through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:8-10- God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! (10) For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
The truth is; we’ve all sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God- (Romans 3:3) We all deserve to suffer the wrath of God. God has given fair warning and provided a way out through Jesus Christ. It’s now up to us to heed the warning and take the way out.
1 Thessalonian 5:8-10- Since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet. (9) for God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. (10) He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Now the challenge is ours to persevere in doing good and seeking glory, honor and immortality, so we might avoid the wrath to come and look forward to eternal life with our Father in Heaven.
