THE CROSS OF CHRIST (By: Mike Sherman)

Death on a cross was despicable in the eyes of Man. The Greeks saw death o a cross as a shameful death. 1 Cor. 1:22-23 – Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, (23) but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,….
The cross was like a stumbling block to the Jews. Their view of one who was crucified on a cross came from their knowledge of the Old Testament. Deut. 21:22-23- If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, (23) you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
The stumbling block referred to in I Cor. 1:22 is not just a trip hazard that may cause a person to “stumble” and almost fall down or actually fall down and scrape a knee. It actually refers to a life threatening or in this case soul threatening “stumbling block.” Jesus made this clear during His earthly ministry. Mat. 21:42-44- Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? (43) “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. (44) Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” The same is true today for anyone who rejects Christ as the Son of God crucified on that cruel cross for their forgiveness.
Thank God Jesus freely gave His life on the cross that we might have the possibility of eternal life. No one took His life from Him, neither Jew nor Greek. John 10:17-18- The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again. (18) No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”
As Christians we praise God for the good news of the gospel- that our burden of sin is lifted at calvary! Preaching the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ was always highest priority for Paul. 1 Cor. 15:1-4- Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. (2) By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. (3) For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Regardless of others response to Jesus and the cross we as Christians glory in the cross of Christ. Gal 6:14- But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. (KJV) We are proud to humbly acknowledge our need for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who willing endured the mental, emotional, and physical pain and suffering on that cruel cross that each of us deserves.
